Application Process for Incoming Students
Deadlines
Nomination deadlines:
- 2 March for the following winter semester or whole academic year
- 2 October for the following summer semester
Submission periods for applications in Mobility-Online:
- 10 February to 15 March, 2023 for the Academic Year 2023/2024 or the Winter Semester 2023/24
- 20 September to 10 October, 2023 for the Summer Semester 2024
Nomination
If you as a student are interested in an exchange semester or an exchange year at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz (KUG), please contact the international coordinator of your home university first. Your coordinator nominates you for an exchange at our university by e-mail to international_office(at)kug.ac.at with the following information:
- first and last name
- e-mail address
- field of study & study cycle at KUG
- period (semester/academic year)
Then you will receive the application link (incl. instructions) to our application system Mobility-Online (MO) by e-mail to the stated e-mail address. Please register and upload all of the necessary and completed documents for your application.
A valid agreement between the KUG and the sending institution is required for an exchange at the KUG!

It is our goal to make it possible for incoming applicants to study at KUG as long as the qualitative requirements are met and there is a free place with the respective teacher. The entire selection process can take up to 12 weeks. As soon as the internal application procedure is completed, we will inform you via e-mail about the result.

Application Requirements
Recommended language skills
The language of instruction in group courses is German - at least Level B1 is expected, but it is possible to receive advice and guidance in English.
For attending courses in music theory, music history, music education or other courses where oral explanations are essential, good German knowledge is required (level B2).
In research projects and in One-to-One-lessons the language will be agreed upon by both parties.
For Musicology good German or English knowledge (level B2 in each case) is necessary.

Recordings or Portfolio
In order to gain a good overview of your artistic spectrum, we ask you to prepare a repertoire that is as varied as possible.
Please upload a separate document to your recordings in Mobility-Online listing the titles of your recordings.
Catholic and Protestant Church Music
To be submitted for admission to the Bachelor's programme Catholic and Protestant Church Music:
- Score playing of a motet: at least in four parts and notated in four systems (upload an informative video and the score)
- Conducting/Choral conducting: written summary of your previous education and practical experience, if available additionally upload a relevant letter of recommendation and/or an informative video.
- Voice: spiritual aria and art song (video or audio)
- Organ: one piece by J. S. Bach with a difficulty level of at least BWV 545 and one piece from the 19th or 20th century (video or audio at an organ or e-organ)
- Improvisation of 3-5 minutes on a church song including harmonization (video or audio at an organ or e-organ)
- Piano: three pieces of medium difficulty from different eras (video or audio at a piano)
To be submitted for admission to the Master's programme Catholic and Protestant Church Music:
- Please upload your Bachelor's certificate and current certificate of the course of studies (Transcript of Records).
- If you choose the focus on Composition of Church Music, upload three of your own liturgical compositions or arrangements.
Composition
- Own compositions with different instrumentation
- Links to recordings of own compositions (if available)
Computer Music and Sound Art
- Links to recordings or documentation of artistic works
- Scores or further descriptions of the works (if available)
Conducting
- 3 pieces of music from different eras (please upload 3 single video files)
- Maximum total duration of all recordings: 30 minutes
Dr. artium (Artistic Research)
- Provide an exposé of the doctoral thesis, referencing the artistic-scientific research method used, and send it to Prof. Dr. Deniz Peters in advance (3 months before the application deadline set by the International Office)
- Provide a link to the current doctoral programme and the name of a contact person from the sending institution
- Before an application as an exchange student at KUG in Mobilty-Online is possible, it must be determined whether the acceptance by an artistic supervisor for the "Privatissimum Dr.artium (KE)" is likely and whether the acceptance from a scientific supervisor for the "colloquium for doctoral students" is also expected.
- The Dr.artium programme in Graz assumes a close dynamic between artistic exploration/ experimentation/reflection through artistic action and intellectual and scientific reflection and research methods. It goes beyond "practice as research"; the theoretical part is accordingly demanding.
Electrical Engineering and Audio Engineering
- Current certificate of the course of studies (title and proof of successfully completed courses in audio engineering, digital signal processing, and acoustics)
- Independent written works from seminars, student projects, or trainings, in German or English
Instrumental Studies
- 3 pieces of music from different eras (please upload 3 single video files)
- Maximum total duration of all recordings: 30 minutes
Jazz
- 4 pieces from the standard repertoire (4 single video or audio files):
- Ballad
- Piece with functional harmony (Stufenharmonik)
- Blues
- Own composition
Music Theory
- Current certificate of the course of studies (title of successfully completed courses and submitted seminar papers)
- 2-3 example works, written analyses, or style studies in German or English
Musicology
- Current certificate of the course of studies (title of successfully completed courses and submitted seminar papers)
- 2-3 example works, written analyses, or style studies in German or English
Performing Arts (Drama)
- Excerpts from stagings, possibly scenes
- At least one monologue
- One self-presentation video
PhD (Musicology)
- A short summary of the planned doctoral work or thesis
Sound Design
- Current certificate of the course of studies
- Special focus on: Courses in the field of Audio Design, Audio Production, Sonic Interaction Design
- Portfolio comprising 10 artistic works
Stage Design
- Portfolio
Teacher Training
- Bachelor’s Programme: Depending on the desired one-to-one-lessons offered at KUG (Instruments Classical, Instruments Jazz/Pop, Instruments Folk Music, Voice Classical, Voice Jazz/Pop), upload three pieces of music each from different eras (Classical) and different styles (Jazz/Pop) - 3 single video files each.
- Master’s Programm: Additionally, please upload a current certificate of the course of studies (Transcript of Records).
Voice (Vocals)
- 3 songs and/or arias from different eras (please upload 3 single video files)
- At least one song or aria in German
- Recordings without cut, applicant in the long shot each
